Setanta Sports Cupdate 12/5/13

All over for another season – Shamrock Rovers’ astonishing 7-1 drubbing of Drogheda United was one of the most complete performances seen in a domestic Cup Final, and both sides easily could have scored more.

A rapturous but-sometimes-drenched crowd of 4022 – a figure presumably not including the on-watching President Michael D Higgins – helped make the eighth Setanta Sports Cup Final a sparkling occasion marked by a lot of significant records.

Shamrock Rovers are All-Ireland champions for an eighth time, a new record, and join Drogheda United on two Setanta Sports Cup wins.

It was the highest scoring one-leg All-Ireland Cup Final ever, surpassed only by Glentoran 5-4 Belfast Celtic over two legs in 1944.

The eight-goal tally in the #SSC Final surpasses all other scorelines in every previous FAI Cup and one-leg League of Ireland Cup Final.

Only two Irish Cup Finals surpass the eight-goal aggregate – Linfield 10-1 Bohemians in 1895 and Distillery 5-4 YMCA in 1889 when the Irish Cup covered the whole of Ireland (up to 1922)

It was Shamrock Rovers’ largest ever #SSCup win and Drogheda’s largest ever #SSCup defeat.

Drogheda had previously only lost 2-0 twice, while Rovers had a hat-trick of three-goal victories to their name.

It was only the second time any club had scored seven goals in a #SSCup game – Cork City’s 7-0 win at Portadown in 2007 remains the largest victory. Linfield beat Glentoran 6-0 in 2006.

It was the joint second-highest aggregate scoreline in a #SSCup tie, matching Linfield 3-5 Dundalk from 2011, but surpassed by Crusaders 4-6 Cliftonville from the same year.

Pat Sullivan and Shane Robinson have now won three winners’ medals, matching the feat of Brian Shelley and Paul Keegan.

Four new players join the list of winners with two clubs: Brian Shelley, Paul Keegan, Dan Murray, Pat Sullivan, Alan Mannus, Shane Robinson, Barry Murphy, Jason McGuinness, Mark Quigley. Robinson didn’t come off the bench but still gets a winner’s medal.

Conor Powell who missed the final through injury had won previously with Bohemians in 2010.

Pld in three finals: Paul Keegan (3 wins), Brian Shelley (3 wins), Pat Sullivan (3 wins), Mark Quigley (2 wins, 1 loss), Alan Mannus (2 wins, 1 loss), Dan Murray (2 wins, 1 loss), Jason Byrne (1 win, 2 losses), Stuart Byrne (1 win, 2 losses)

Also involved in three finals, but didn’t play in every one: Shane Robinson (3 wins), Declan “Fabio” O’Brien (2 wins, 1 loss), Glen Fitzpatrick (2 wins, 1 loss – the first three finals), Shane Guthrie (3 lost)

Shane Guthrie is the only man to be involved in three finals, and to have lost every one. No-one has featured in four finals before.

Billy Dennehy finishes the #SSCup season as joint top scorer with Cork City’s Daryl Kavanagh – Dennehy is also Shamrock Rovers’ all-time #SSCup top scorer with seven.

Gary O’Neill’s consolation for Drogheda United was his eighth all-time Setanta Sports Cup goal, putting him joint fourth on the all-time list alongside Linfield’s Paul McAreavey and Rory Patterson.

Dennehy’s brace puts him in joint seventh alongside Jason Byrne on seven goals.

It’s the second successive year that two players have scored a brace in the final – Ronan Finn and Dennehy this year, Colin Coates and Rory Patterson last year. These are the only four people to achieve the feat.

James Chambers’ opener after 11 minutes is the fastest to be scored in the #SSC Final, beating Anto Murphy’s winner after 24 minutes for Bohemians in the 2010 final.

66 goals were scored in this year’s competition – up 14 on last year’s tally of 52, also over 21 games.

There were an average 3.14 goals per game, the second-highest average over the eight seasons of competition, beaten only by the 3.29 average from 2011.

All time goals – 465. Denis Behan and Peter Thompson top the list with 11, Mark Quigley 10.

Setanta Sports Cup Final Facts and Figures

Image

It’s the eighth Setanta Sports Cup Final today, pitting together Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United in a rematch of last season’s League Cup Final, which the Boynesiders won.

It’s the last decider under the current sponsorship, which is the longest-running in Irish senior football. Organisers are confident of securing a new sponsor – they’ve spoken to a few candidates already – and that it will be business as usual next season.

Some facts and figures ahead of the big game –

Drogheda United are the only club to win the Setanta Sports Cup twice, and will become the first club to play in three finals.

Paul Keegan and Brian Shelley are the only men to have won the Setanta Sports Cup three times – 2006+ 07 for Drogheda 2010 for Bohs.

Pat Sullivan and Shane Robinson for Rovers and Declan “Fabio” O’Brien of Drogheda are all going for a third winners’ medal today – Robinson and O’Brien both won their titles with Drogheda.

Pld in three finals: Paul Keegan (3 wins), Brian Shelley (3 wins), Alan Mannus (2 wins, 1 loss), Dan Murray (2 wins, 1 loss), Jason Byrne (1 win, 2 losses), Stuart Byrne (1 win, 2 losses)

Also involved in three finals, but didn’t play in every one: Glen Fitzpatrick (2 wins, 1 loss – the first three finals), Shane Guthrie (3 lost)

Shane Guthrie is the only man to be involved in three finals, and to have lost every one. No-one has featured in four finals before.

Stuart Byrne and Shane Guthrie are the only men to be involved in three finals, with a different club each time. Byrne: Shels 2005, Drogheda 2007, St Pats 2010; Guthrie: Cork 2006, St Pats 2010, Dundalk 2011.

Dan Murray is the only man to captain two different clubs to Setanta Cup glory – Cork City in 2008, Shamrock Rovers in 2010.

Pat Sullivan was at Drogheda when they won the Setanta Cup in 2006, but missed the final through injury, so this is his third final.

Winners with two clubs: Brian Shelley, Paul Keegan, Dan Murray, Pat Sullivan, Alan Mannus.

Alan Mannus is the only player to have won the Setanta Sports Cup with clubs from both Associations – Linfield in 2005 and Shamrock Rovers in 2011.

Mark Quigley goes into the final on 10 goals, one behind all-time top-scorers Denis Behan and Peter Thompson.

Quigley is the only player to have netted for four different clubs in Setanta Sports Cup history – St Pats, Dundalk, Sligo and Shamrock Rovers.

Three other players have scored for three different clubs – Jason Byrne, Gary O’Neill, Thomas Stewart.

Cork City are all-time leading scorers on 59 goals, followed by Linfield on 53, Glentoran 42, Derry City 41, Drogheda 40.

Glentoran have conceded most Setanta Sports Cup goals all-time, letting in 67. Next are Portadown 53, Linfield 51, Cliftonville 39, Dungannon 37.

Out of 28 all-time semi-finalists, only six have come from the Irish League. It’s the fourth all-LOI final.

LOI clubs have won five Setanta Sports Cups, IFA clubs have come out on top twice – Linfield in 2005, Crusaders 2012.

Three finals have gone to extra-time – 2006 Shels v Cork, 2007 Linfield v Drogheda, 2012 Crusaders v Derry – the last two going to penalties.

Four players have been sent-off in Setanta Sports Cup finals – Jason Byrne and Alan Moore (both Shelbourne) v Linfield in 2005; Danny Murphy (Cork City) v Drogheda United in 2006; Stephen McBride (Crusaders) v Derry City 2012.

Setanta Sports Cupdate 22/4/13

Another dramatic semi-finals night with Cork City seemingly scoring a late winner against Shamrock Rovers at Turner’s Cross only for Shamrock Rovers to score an even later leveller to send them through to the May 11 Final on away goals.

Some key lines from last night –

Shamrock Rovers’ late late equaliser at Turner’s Cross was the eight time in 14 games this season Cork City have conceded after the 85th minute (h/t @trevorcarey1982)

Sligo Rovers’ 1-0 win over Drogheda was their first in the #SSCup over #LOI opposition, but still lost the tie overall.

Daryl Kavanagh is now outright top scorer in the #SSCup this season on four goals.

Five of the all-time top 20 #SSCup scorers are still in the competition – Mark Quigley, Gary O’Neill, Thomas Stewart, Billy Dennehy, Ciaran Kilduff (all ShamR)

Denis Behan and Peter Thompson remain as joint top scorers on 11 goals, and pnly Mark Quigley on 10 can realistically surpass them this season.

Shamrock Rovers’ two draws against Cork City are the only two they’ve ever had in the competition.

Drogheda United are through to their third final – a new record. They’ve won the previous two.

Drogheda are also the only club to win the competition more than once – in 2006 and 2007.

Setanta Sports Cupdate 17/4/13

So both Setanta Sports Cup semi-finals are still wide open ahead of next week’s second legs, with Drogheda United taking a 2-0 lead with them to Sligo, while Cork City and Shamrock Rovers will resume at one-all in front of the cameras at Turner’s Cross.

Some notable updated lines from last night –

Danny Murphy’s own goal for Shamrock Rovers against his own Cork City was the sixth scored in competition history, the first against Cork.

Had Rovers’ goal been credited to Mark Quigley, it would have been his 11th, drawing him level with Denis Behan and Peter Thompson.

Cork City are highest scorers in #SSCup history with 57. Linfield have 53, Glentoran 42, Derry City 41.

Daryl Kavanagh (Cork), Lee Lynch (Sligo) and Ciaran Kilduff (ShamR) are joint top scorers this season with three goals. Rory Patterson top-scored last season with six.

Last night’s one-all draw between Shamrock Rovers and Cork City was Rovers’ first ever in the #SSCup.

Sligo Rovers have played LOI opposition six times in the #SSCup – they’ve never won a game yet.

53 goals have been scored in the 2013 Setanta Sports Cup – one more than in 2012.

450 goals exactly have now been scored in Setanta Sports Cup history since 2005.

Setanta Sports Cupdate 16/4/13

Semi-finals night in the Setanta Sports Cup tonight (first legs). Shamrock Rovers v Cork City is the live game at 7:30, with Drogheda United hosting Sligo Rovers at 7:45.

Some random notes ahead of tonight –

Shamrock Rovers and Cork City have never met in the competition before, neither have Drogheda United or Sligo Rovers.

Denis Behan is joint top all-time scorer alongside Peter Thompson on 11 goals, but hasn’t scored in the comp since 2008.

Mark Quigley on 10 goals is one behind Behan and Thompson.

It’s Cork’s 34th #SSCup tie tonight – only Glentoran and Linfield have played more.

Three of the fourth sides playing tonight are in a joint record fourth #SSCup semi-final – Cork City, Sligo Rovers and Drogheda.

Shamrock Rovers record against LOI clubs: P5 W4 D0 L1 Gls8-4

Cork City’s record against LOI clubs: P12 W5 D3 L4 Gls12-9

Drogheda United’s record against LOI clubs: P10 W4 D4 L2 Gls8-8

Setanta Sports Cup All-Time Scorers

Just off the plane from Gothenburg and it’s immediately off to Tallaght for the Setanta Sports Cup quarter-final first-leg between Shamrock Rovers and Linfield – their first meeting since 1984.

Two of the three all-time top scorers in the competition are due to play tonight – Peter Thompson and Mark Quigley. The Rovers attacker has scored 10 goals so far across four different clubs – a now-corrected Wikipedia article wrongly credited a 2011 semi-final goal to Daniel Kearns, which is why you may have seen it reported elsewhere as him being on nine.

The top 23 scorers of all-time are – Image

Shamrock Rovers and Linfield both come into the game with a 50-50 record against teams from the other side of the border.

Rovers have supplied an excellent stats pack for the game, compiled by Karl Reilly – and that’s definitely worth a name-check tonight. But I’ll probably forget, so he’ll get one here.

Linfield will become all-time tournament top scorers again if they outscore Cork City by two goals tonight – the FAI don’t incorporate walkovers into their records.
