The largest Irish team for years at a World Championships have come to the Chinese capital, with Rob Heffernan defending his 50k walk title. In fact, Ireland have medalled at three of the last six games via walkers.

The Irish team consists of –

Kelly Proper (Ferrybank) 200m
Ciara Everard (UCD) 800m
Ben Reynolds (North Down) 110m hurdles
4x400m relay (Thomas Barr, Mark English, Brian Gregan, Brian Murphy, Richard Morrissey (both Crusaders), Timmy Crowe (Clonliffe Harriers)
